A few weeks before my father passed away, he prepared a simple hand-written net worth statement including names and death benefit of his life insurance policies. This one page made me and my mother's lives so much easier.......because we did not have to search around to find all the assets and insurance policies. I highly recommend preparing a Letter of Instruction, including a net worth statement, and a listing of life insurance policies, which is updated annually. !*U

According to the tables in this book, most states require probate. The dollar value trigger amount for requiring probate is all over the map by state.......anywhere from $0 to $150K. =t+{)d.w

The book doesn't mention funeral costs. My dad's conventional funeral had a cost of $11K.......and this does not include cemetery plot and tombstone. q$;'Fy%oy

As the book mentions, settling an estate of a spouse who dies first, can be greatly simplified by actions taken prior to death. Bank accounts or CD's with POD to surviving spouse simplifies things. Joint custody of property can also simplify things. Of course the challenge for most people is even thinking about death......let alone plan for it. Tath9wlv6;

I got this book because I have been appointed the executor for my father, and I needed to know what was expected of me and what he and I needed to talk about. So this book has been a great help in getting our conversation started. However, this should not be the only source of information. The main thing I learned from this book was that being an executor is more complicated than I thought, and much of the work needs to be done BEFORE the person dies! There are so many conversations about money, belongings, people, wishes and desires that need to be discussed, and this does not even begin to include all the medical questions one might need to cover!!! So, if you are being asked to be an executor prior to the death of a person, GREAT, because you can now use this book - and others - to sit down and make some plans. +Rtz`V1d
