The six-time Olympic coach from the Coral Springs Swim Club is still battling aplastic anemia, a rare and life-threatening bone marrow disorder he was diagnosed with after the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials. However, he has his doctors' blessing to travel and coach his swimmers at the 13th FINA World Aquatics Championships. "For me this is my Olympics," Lohberg said by phone from Rome. "Had I gone to Beijing, I would be dead, no question. Now I have a handle on this and in a much better place than I was last year." Two of Lohberg's star swimmers compete today on the first of eight days of swimming. His others, Arlene Semeco and Leo Andara, of Venezuela, compete later this week. shzaoj29 In what could possibly be her last major meet, Torres, at 42, the oldest member of the United States team, will open today in the women's 4x100-meter freestyle. Later in the week, she will swim the 50-meter butterfly and 50-meter freestyle, events she holds American records in, and 4x100-meter medley relay. Club teammate and St. Thomas Aquinas alum Vlad Polyakov, representing Kazakhstan, swims the 100-meter breaststroke today. Torres has been battling an arthritic left knee since the Beijing Olympics. She had the knee drained twice since arriving at the U.S. team training camp in Riccione, outside of Rome, and had a cortisone shot to alleviate the pain. "I am excited and ready to race … I want to give these girls a run for their money," said Torres, who was roasted because of her age during team skits this past week. "It was all great fun." Torres put off knee surgery until after the world championships. After the surgery, she is expected to be sidelined at least three months. For now the five-time Olympian's future is up in the air.
