The wireless ad hoc networks (WANETs) comprise several types of networks such as mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), mesh networks, sensor networks, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) and multi-hop cellular networks (MCNs).

WANETs are based on the point-to-point networking concept, in which each node acts as wireless relay/router along the path between source and destination. This provides an essentially effective networking medium in infrastructure-less environments such as rural and desert areas.

The nature of WANETs leads to several advantages in comparison with that of wireless cellular technologies. The relatively low cost and complexity of installation in infrastructure-less areas, the autonomous nodes, the self- healing and configuration capabilities, and several other properties enable WANETs for networking the most kinds of environment. Nevertheless, this nature also causes several technical issues and challenges for adopting WANETs in certain environments and/or for certain applications. The resources constrains due to channel sharing, the performance of current routing protocols and QoS mechanisms, the distributed coordination of network access, and many other issues and challenges represent essential topics for future enhancement of the current ad hoc technologies.

Thus, beside the optimization of current WANET solutions the development of efficient solutions for those mentioned problems represents the main challenge for the Next Generation WANETs (NG-WANETs). In addition, using WANET based communication technologies in other fields such as for deep space communication networks could open new perspectives for accelerating the development and adoption of those technologies. Furthermore, bionic- inspired mechanisms and solutions can constructively help researchers to benefit from the nature experience to improve the current solutions and to develop new methods and concepts for solving critical technical problems.

Consequently, new research fields could emerge which open new dimensions and creates new perspectives of WANETs for future applications and services.

This workshop represents the first step to figure out these dimensions and perspectives of NG-WANETs and aims at providing a space for debate and knowledge sharing among researchers working on state-of-the-art solutions to the current issues and challenges of WANETs. All researchers and practitioners are invited to participate in the debate and knowledge sharing about the current WANETs and how the NG-WANETs are going to be in the near and far future. We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished contributions concerning various aspects of current and future WANETs.
