Different CAD-kernels use different description languages and accuracies. Therefore the CAD-Export to other kernels can lead to problems. The CST studio family offers several advanced possibilities for the healing of problematic CAD files.

In any case where a CAD problem shows up we highly recommend to activate a new, very robust meshing algorithm implemented recently in our STUDIO products. This mesher can be activated via the flag "PBA acceleration" which can be found under "Mesh -> Global Mesh Properties -> Specials". In 95% of all cases the problem should be fixed.
Increase "Point Accuracy Enhancement" to eg. 50% or higher (Mesh Properties -> Specials... -> Advanced).
Replace the problematic body by a facetted body (Objects -> Solid Healing Tools -> Faceted Representation of Shape...).
Use staircase mesh (with a fine local mesh size) locally for this body.
For advanced users only we attach the following document providing some background information how to heal the structure manually. All other users we recommend to contact CST support in case that the above setting fails.

How does the DXF Export feature works? (Faq #12)

The usage of the DXF-export feature, which is available in the standard license (not requiring any special license feature) is as following:

By executing "File->Export->DXF..." all cross sections within the xy-plane (z=0) or uv-plane (w=0, if local uvw-coordinates are switched on) are exported into DXF format.

Key point for the smoothless transition of data from Allegro/APD to the CST product family is that your Allegro/APD supports Skill functionality. This is the case for

The export has been tested to work proper with version 14.2, 15.0, 15.2 and 15.5.

Side note: Please be aware that during the setup process CADENCE always expects the backslash (\) of the Windows pathes to be replaced by the slash (/) !

Especially important is that the Environment Variable "CST_LINK_HOME" contains slashes and NOT back slashes (e.g. C:/work instead of C:\work ).

How can I import/setup my own voxel data sets? (Faq #92)

CST offers the possibility to import (arbitrary) voxel data sets into CST MICROWAVE STUDIO? and CST EM STUDIO?.

The voxel import interface (which does not contain any data) and a sophiscated Human Model dataset for different spatial resolutions (1-8 mm) (which requires the voxel import interface) are offered seperately. If you are interested in extending your current installation by this functionality please contact your account manager.

How to convert files when linking a UNIX based ADS/Momentum with CST MWS? (Faq #126)

If Momentum runs on UNIX, the exported proj-files need to be converted via a Unix2Dos utility (under Unix) prior to an import into CST MWS (via ADS-Macro). It mainly concerns the Cr/Lf of the lines. A workaround to convert these files would be to open the files via Word and/or WordPad and save them as "MSDOS" format.

How can I parameterise imported CAD models? (Faq #134)

You can parameterise imported objects by changing so called "CAD features", by extruding faces or adding objects within CST MWS which then can be edited. A direct parameterisation is not possible (an exception is the fully parameterisable CADENCE import).

Where can I find the files for installing the CST MWS interface within CADENCE Allegro/APD? (Faq #153)

The installation files are located in the CST STUDIO SUITE installation directory in the subfolder "Cadence Allegro APD Plugin". The guideline how to install them is contained in the file "CST_Link Installation Guidelines (v2.0).html". The installation process within the CADENCE environment is not automised, CST therefore highly recommends that this installation is only done by users having a sufficient knowledge of the CADENCE product environment. Otherwise the colleagues in charge of CADENCE should be contacted in order to get help.

For CST MICROWAVE STUDIO ? 2006 the installation guide can be found in the "Getting Started" Tutorial in (in the installation directory of the CST STUDIO SUITE 2006\Documentation\Microwave Studio).

How are units handled when importing CAD models? (Faq #175)

All CAD models are imported in absolute units. The CST STUDIO SUITE? ignores, that the CAD file (IGES, SAT, STL, STEP, ...) was originally modelled in e.g. inches (even though the info might be contained in the header of the related file). Therefore each import is just reading in absolute numbers without regarding the units.

The new unit is the one, chosen by the user in the CST STUDIO SUITE environment. So 1 (inch) will become 1 CST MWS-unit (inch, mm, mil, m, ...). This approach is very flexible; for accuracy reasons CST nevertheless recommends to use the same units as in your CAD-program and to avoid any scaling of the structure.

How can I export structures in GERBER format? (Faq #177)

The CST STUDIO suite does currently not support the export of designs in GERBER file format. However, structures can be exported from within the CST STUDIO SUITE as DXF and a DXF-to-GERBER converter can then be applied to obtain the requested result.

What are the differences between Standard DXF and Extended DXF import? (Faq #184)

The basic DXF import is able to import simple DXF files without any hierarchy. The supported DXF elements include LINES, POLYLINES, LWPOLYLINES, ARCS and CIRCLES. More advanced DXF features like hierarchy and lines with finite thickness is supported by the Extended DXF import option.

Here some of the differences in detail:

Hierarchical block-structures can be handled.
Polylines can have a finite thickness (a microstrip-line can be just a line instead of a polygon).
SOLIDS
Import and healing of elements with a different start and end thickness
