Abstract

We report on the initial tests of a large diameter (12 cm) S[WG$  
double shell nozzle designed for use with the 300 ns risetime Jgnhn>dHe  
current pulse (> 6 MA) of the DECADE QUAD P#=`2a#G  
(DQ) pulsed power machine. The nozzle employs unique k
'0Pi6  
features to simplify construction, enhance gas flow lz1wO5%h  
reproducibility, and reduce fabrication costs. With a large "*G.EiLq  
4 cm recess, the gas flow at the pinch location is well mZd , 9  
collimated and nearly a uniform fill, a flow condition that 4Y[1aQ(%  
has been shown [1] to give better output than shell-like (}}S9K  
flows for gas z-pinches. u\eEh*<7q  
Results with this nozzle on the Double Eagle simulator giz7{Ai  
indicate that such long implosion time pinches are not
y!!2WHvE  
hopelessly unstable. K-shell emission is at the levels " Hd|7F'u=  
expected from empirical scaling at other peak currents and y+7w,m2  
implosion times. The overall morphology (pulse width [l
,Ei?  
and spatial extent) of the pinch can be varied from tight 3}e%[AKh  
and concentrated to broad and extended by the choice of "etPT@gF  
relative pressures in the plenums that drive the two nozzle j~*L~7
