A summary of the status of diode research at the UK ~P fk   
Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) is presented. * `3+x  
AWE has a requirement to develop intense (1000R at +<Y1`kV)  
1m), fast duration (50ns) Bremsstrahlung x-ray sources woUt*G@  
from small areas (<2mm diameter uniformly filled disc Z6fR2A~Q[  
equivalent) at high peak energies (>10MeV). These ?>Bt|[p:s)  
sources are required to provide high quality transmission @rE+H 5  
radiographic images through thick (hundreds of ~--b#o{  
grams/cm2 of lead equivalent density x thickness), high &SMM<^P.  
atomic number, explosively driven metal systems in a (j&7`9<5  
proposed new hydrodynamics research facility. 1VA%xOURh  
In order to deliver such sources in a cost-effective manner II]-mb  
an extensive research programme is being conducted at %Y=  
AWE to increase the current density at which high-energy AzMX~cd  
electron beams can be focussed in electron beam diodes ^tL]QE?|  
in such flash radiographic sources. ' -td/w  
The work on improvements to pulsed power facilities t vp kc;  
and diagnostics at AWE is described in terms of the Wgm{ ]9Q  
development of high quality research facilities for high "lA8CA  
and low impedance diode development. In addition, an )uO 3v  
overview of the status and direction of research >p29|TFbV  
programmes at AWE to look at four diode technologies is R[W'LRh~:1  
presented. Those diode technologies are immersed Bz 8Xa{.y"  
diode development, paraxial diode development and both 0zpA<"S
