Abstract: A helical antenna, consisting of a MLT^7'y  
winding over a spherical surface, is proposed and MUW&m2  
investigated, both theoretically and \=&F\EV  
experimentally. The winding is such that a M/a40uK  
constant spacing between turns is maintained. It 6* 6 |R93  
is fed coaxially, with the inner conductor forming %M5{-pJ|C  
the helical winding and the outer conductor kxH` c  
becoming the ground plane. Radiation J?%ecCN  
characteristics of the proposed spherical helix are BqtUL_jm  
calculated, using the method of moments, and UC@Jsj~f  
compared with the measured results. The results S&J>15oWM`  
of this investigation indicate that radiation b!4Z~d0=  
properties of the spherical helix are markedly f2iA5 rCV]  
different from those of the conventional M.oH,Kd6  
cylindrical helix. Of particular interest is that, 7U1^=Y@t}  
over a certain bandwidth, the proposed helix is -T=sY/O  
capable of providing circular polarisation over a OPuty/^!Gw  
broad beamwidth. This property and its compact
