Abstract: A helical antenna, consisting of a TwBwqQ)t  
winding over a spherical surface, is proposed and ',L>UIXw  
investigated, both theoretically and S'>(4a  
experimentally. The winding is such that a ^&oa\7<'  
constant spacing between turns is maintained. It .LDK+c  
is fed coaxially, with the inner conductor forming }gQ FWT  
the helical winding and the outer conductor h2g|D(u)  
becoming the ground plane. Radiation lub(chCE[  
characteristics of the proposed spherical helix are tu}AJ  
calculated, using the method of moments, and ZS0=xS5q)  
compared with the measured results. The results s`W
\`w}  
of this investigation indicate that radiation T#'+w@Q9{9  
properties of the spherical helix are markedly 4fPbwiKj  
different from those of the conventional W]kh?+SZ  
cylindrical helix. Of particular interest is that, [03$*BCq3  
over a certain bandwidth, the proposed helix is 5$o]
D  
capable of providing circular polarisation over a tZlz0BY!  
broad beamwidth. This property and its compact
